On 21 January 1916, Constable Brown showed conspicuous gallantry in saving the life of a woman who had attempted suicide by throwing herself into the River Clyde. Constable Brown entered the water and swam out 50 yards to reach her. He then brought her to the river bank despite the temperature being very cold and the river fast flowing.
